Heroes of Technology: William Kamkwamba

William Kamkwamba is from the poor African country of Malawi. In 2001 when he was 14 years old, a drought came over the land and Wiliam and his family could only eat one small meal per day. Since school is not free in Malawi, he also had to quit school. William was not happy with the way things were so he went to a library and even though his English was poor, he used diagrams to teach himself to build a windmill from materials that he found in a scrapyard.

Although people thought he was crazy, William's windmill generated electricity. He built another one to pump water for irrigation. Like the person who built a better mousetrap, people beat a path to the teenage inventor's door.

Now 22, William gave this inspirational six-minute talk a few months ago. I strongly encourage you to view it.
