New Books on Addiction, Food, and the Environment

A History of Food, by Maguelonne Toussaint-Samat. The New York Times raved that this new and expanded version is "indispensible, and endlessly fascinating." The topic is the social history of food. Beautifully illustrated.



Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, by Lester R. Brown. Brown is an "eco-economist." In fact, he's probably the world's most preeminent eco-economist, studying the results of civilization's effect on the environment. The bottom line according to Brown: The business-as-usual path we've been on (Plan A) with regards to the environment is leading us to economic decline and collapse. Brown's Plan B 3.0 will put things on the right track.

Addiction: A Disorder of Choice, by Gene M. Heyman. In this book, Heyman argues that the conventional wisdom about addiction - that it is a disease, a compulsion beyond conscious control - is wrong. Based on extensive research Heyman makes a powerful case that addiction is voluntary. People (some more than others) have a deep-seated tendency to consume too much of whatever we like the best. That reality has relevance beyond drugs and alcohol in our society today.

How to Talk to Your Adolescent About Alcohol

Probably the best kept secret - until now - of our Fond du Lac campus library, is the Pamphlet File. Admittedly, we don't have a ton of pamphlets, but I would venture to guess that they are, as a group, the most up-to-date and probably even the most practical part of our overall collection. (Tell me if you think I'm wrong.)


Anyway, today I am promoting one particular pamphlet that was created for parents. It is called How to Talk to your Adolescent About Alcohol. In a survey of parents, 92% said this brochure helped facilitate a conversation about alcohol.
The pamphlet addresses when to have the talk about alcohol with your child and how to discuss it. It provides tips for engaging in a discussion, not a one-way lecture.


How to Talk to Your Adolescent About Alcohol helps you give your child information about how alcohol affects them. Furthermore, it can also help you to answer some of their objections, like "grown-ups drink alcohol, so why can't I?" This pamphlet even shows parents how to help their children to say "no" when offered alcohol by their peers or others.

With approximately 200 entries, The Encyclopedia of Drug Abuse covers the full range of illegal and legal drugs and how they affect society. Taking a global perspective, this new title from Facts on File looks at the worldwide drug trade and the effects of drug abuse in countries and cultures around the world, it examines various types of drugs and how they function, taking into account a wide variety of issues, including prevention and law-enforcement efforts.

Appendices provide statistics, directories of helpful groups and organizations, and resources for further research.
