The US Green Building Council (USGBC) has an internationally recognized green building certification known as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). LEED certification provides third-party verification that "a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance" on some metrics that are very important in terms of environmental impact. Those metrics include energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
Another site, LEED User, provides support for green builders with tips, checklists, sample documentation and a discussion forum.
