LGBT Resources

In case you didn't know, LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgenedered. Here are some LGBT resources that we recommend:

Books:

Gay and Lesbian Issues: A Reference Handbook by Chuck Stewart

The contents of this book include a History of the Gay Rights Movement, Problems and Solutions, Biographical Sketches, and a Directory of National and International Organizations and Associations. Fond du Lac Campus, call number HQ 76.25 .S748 2003

Transgender Voices: Beyond Men and Women by Lori B. Girshick
One-hundred-and-fifty transgender and “gender variant” people were interviewed for this extraordinary book. Sociologist and social activist Lori Girshick brought their voices together to demonstrate that “there is nothing inherently binary about gender.” Fond du Lac campus, Call number HQ 77.7 G57 2008

PDF Manual:
Cuyahoga Community College’s Safe Zone Ally Training Manual:
Throughout much of our nation it is still common for LGBT students to experience verbal harassment and even to be assaulted. Unfortunately, when these things happen they are seldom reported to school staff, because it is feared that they would either take no action or that any actions taken would make the situation worse. This document was created to change that sad reality.

Websites:

Safe Zone Foundation
The Safe Zone Foundation supports schools, colleges, universities, and community groups that provide progams and services for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people in their schools and communities. The Safe Zone Foundation provides technical support, education and training, and financial support in the form of grants, donations and sponsorships.

PFLAG - Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays:
This national organization was founded in 1972. They work with a variety of institutions (including churches and colleges) to promote advocacy and inform the public to help those of “diverse sexual orientations and gender identities” reach their full potential as human beings.

Bisexual Resource Center:
The Bisexual Resource Center maintains that bisexuals today are still misunderstood, marginalized and discriminated against. Therefore, it is their mission to support the bisexual community and raise public awareness about bisexuality and bisexual people.

Resources for Coming Out - Human Resources Campaign:
The rite of coming out is different for everybody. The Human Resources Campaign addresses specific issues faced by Bisexuals, transgender individuals and those who come from “communities of color.”
There is also a section for those who wish to be “straight supporters.”

National Center for Lesbian Rights:
The NCLR is a public interest law firm that litigates precedent-setting cases at the trial and appellate court levels; advocates for equitable public policies affecting the LGBT community; provides free legal assistance to LGBT people and their legal advocates; and conducts community education on LGBT legal issues.

Matthew Shepard Foundation:
Named after Matthew Shepard, the college student from Wyoming whose murder was a hate crime, the stated goal of the site is to replace hate with understanding, compassion and acceptance. It seems they also like to have fun doing it.

More LGBT Resources from the UW-Madison:
Some of these links are related specifically to groups and activities based in the Madison area. There are also lots of resources for specific sub-groups of LGBT’s, such as the disabled, “people of color,” religious affiliations, etc.
